Our Vision is to be the first in choice and quality in services and employment for people who are blind.

AVRE has been providing vision rehabilitation and employment services throughout the Twin Tiers for over 90 years. Fifty-eight of those years were spent at 55 Washington Street in Binghamton. In January 2007, AVRE moved into its new home at 174 Court Street in Binghamton - the realization of AVRE's new Center of Excellence in Vision Rehabilitation and Employment.

The expanded and modernized Business Division was the first part of the Center to be up and running. The new facility offered a safer, more efficient working environment and created the potential for significant business growth for AVRE. The Business Division satisfies dual roles - it creates jobs for people with sustained and severe vision loss, as well as generates revenue to subsidize AVRE's vision rehabilitation programming.

In July 2007, a long-time dream came true when the doors of our first on-site low vision clinic. With the creation of the Norman Richterman Low Vision Center, another valuable service was added. The Center enables consumers to come directly to the facility to have comprehensive low vision exams and to try out, learn about, and receive prescribed vision aids.

In September 2007, ACCESS-Tech Center opened its doors to consumers. Thanks to grants from the Appalachian Regional Commission and the George and Margaret Mee Foundation, ACCESS-Tech is able to offer the latest and greatest in adaptive technology. The Center offers consumers an opportunity to try Global Positioning Systems (GPS) devices, hand-held magnifiers, refreshable Braille notepads and keyboards, as well as portable Closed Circuit TVs (CCTVs).

In November 2007, our on-site retail store - ViewPoint - opened for business. The store offers hundreds of accessible aids and devices that are designed to assist in making independent living more attainable for people of all ages who have sustained and severe vision loss.

These services stand together as the Four Cornerstones of AVRE's Center of Excellence. Consumers in the Twin Tiers now have the opportunity to receive truly comprehensive vision rehabilitation services all under one roof. What used to take weeks or even months, can now be done in hours.
