AVRE's Business Division presents an array of employment opportunities for people who are blind or visually impaired. Production Manager Luigi DiRusso has been with AVRE for 10 years. Luigi has progressed from an entry level position to the team lead for one of AVRE’s busiest departments. Luigi now oversees all manufacturing departments as Production Manager. It is clear Luigi wants to continue growing as a leader. He has shown the interest and ability to lead others in AVRE’s unique environment and has the potential to be promoted to higher level positions.

Light Assembly

There's never a dull moment in the Light Assembly department! AVRE takes on a variety of unique projects commercially and through state and federal set aside programs. Current projects include repackaging Goody hair products for sale in military commissaries abroad and packaging batteries for the New York City Housing Authority. We've put together educational kits for the New York Teacher's Association and packaged environmentally friendly cleaning products for sale in the state and federal markets. AVRE's business development team is always working to identify and meet the needs of its current and potential customers.

Switchboard Operations

AVRE contracts to manage switchboard operations at two Veterans Administration Medical Centers downstate - Montrose and Castle Point. Operators are responsible for all incoming calls, including relaying all emergencies to the appropriate parties. They also monitor many hospital alarms with the use of adaptive, audio equipment. Adaptive technology is critical to successfully running this operation. Each operator's needs are accounted for so that each can perform their jobs at the highest quality level. Collectively and individually, our operators have received awards and recognitions for their commitment to excellence in the workplace. I.  JOB IDENTIFICATION
 
A.  TITLE:  Shipping and Logistics Manager
B.  REPORTS TO: Director of Operations
C.  FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt
 
II.  STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
 
The Shipping and Logistics Manager is responsible for overseeing all distribution and logistics processes within AVRE’s business division. This position will manage and provide guidance to ensure all AVRE inbound and outbound shipments arrive on time and are accurate. This position will provide analysis and methods for cost savings, maintain budgets, and provide analytics and recommendations on freight costs by business units. Reporting to the Director of Operations, the Shipping and Logistics Manager will work closely with cross-functional teams to drive continuous improvement, optimize processes, and foster a positive work environment.
 
III.  RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE WORK OF OTHERS
 
The Shipping and Logistics Manager supervises the following:
A. Logistics Supervisor
B. Shipping Clerk
C. Shipping Specialist
 
IV.  BUSINESS COMMUNICATION
 
A. Communication with the Director of Operations is ongoing.
B. Communication with the Director of Manufacturing is ongoing
C. Communication with the Production Manager and Team Leads is frequent.
D. Communication with warehouse personnel is frequent.
E. Communication with the Customer Relations Specialist is frequent.
F. Communication with multiple channels of distribution is ongoing.
 
V.  SUPERVISION REQUIRED
 
The position requires the ability to work independently, but in close coordination with the Director of Operations.
 
VI.  EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
 
A. Five years of experience in the fields of operations, distribution, shipping/receiving, freight management, and manufacturing is required.
B. A bachelor’s or technical degree in a related discipline is preferred.
 
 
VII.  PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
 
A. Must be able to sit or stand for more than 4 hours in a workday. 
 
 
VIII.  TRAINING AND SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED
 
A. Knowledge of the web based Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) program and MAPADOC (SAGE) program is required.
B. Knowledge of AbilityOne distribution channels, NYS Preferred Source Program, is preferred.
C. Ability to work collaboratively in a diverse work environment with all levels of employees
D. Ability to accomplish multiple tasks in a timely manner; ability to organize.
E. Detail oriented; able to keep accurate records and documentation
F. Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel, reporting and formulas.
G. Good written and verbal communication skills. 
 
IX.  PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
 
A. Management of Staff – Oversee shipping staff members and lead their daily operations.
 
B. Freight and Shipping – Manage all aspects of transporting and delivering product within AVRE’s business division, including receiving, storing, picking, and shipping.
Effectively manage and maintain strong relationships with freight carriers. 
Maintain a high standard of service performance. Monitor shipping data to ensure all shipments are processed in a timely and accurate manner so that customer expectations are met. 
Effectively negotiate pricing, manage the claims process (monitor claim activity and delivery performance of freight carriers). Analyze and make recommendations when necessary. Reconcile freight costs and bills. 
Provide business development, customer service, and others with all costing needs related to freight to assist with new proposals, orders, and repricing. 
Manage continuous improvement efforts within the shipping and receiving team. Communicate effectively with team members and participants to coordinate activities.
Serve as point-of-contact on all aspects of freight for large and complex orders for state and federal customers. Manage relationship with customers to provide updates on specific projects. Collaborate with the Director of Operations to ensure relationships are maintained. 
 
C. Delivery Disputes, Damages, and Returns – Manage all disputes with freight carriers and damaged or returned product from the customer until resolution. Coordinate internally with customer service, accounting and the Production Manager on remediation. 
 
D. Warehouse Support – Collaborate with Production Manager to monitor and manage inventory levels for finished products to build shipments to meet the customer’s needs.  
 
E. Data Analytics and Reporting – Provide analytics on all business operations data needs. May include but not limited to freight-related reporting and analytics. 
Manage and complete the AbilityOne service level report on a quarterly basis.  Report analytics within the team to drive process improvements.
Provide monthly sales reports to help drive sales efforts
Establish, meet, and track KPIs to improve operational performance.
 
F. ISO Quality procedures – Ensure compliance with all ISO 9001:2015 processes within shipping and receiving team. 
 
G. Ensure compliance with safety regulations and company policies.
 
 
X.  ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
 
A. Strong problem-solving skills in a manufacturing environment. 
B. Possess the ability to implement and manage changes in the business environment.
C. Willingness to learn, improve, and adapt.
